December Athlete of the Month – Trista Miller

After starting my career as a nurse five years ago, I quickly learned I needed an outlet for the everyday stresses that come with the profession.  I opted to join a local gym and focus on cardio alone as I found the weight machines much too intimidating.  I was satisifed with this routine for quite awhile but after a hitting a plateau, I traded the elliptical for the treadmill…and I was hooked.  I started out running just a few miles but it quickly turned into miles and miles, day after day, without rest days.  As I started running more and more, I started to consume fewer and fewer calories.  Although I was eating “healthy,” I was lacking many nutrients to maintain a healthy weight.  Over the course of two years I dropped to 86 pounds on a 5’2″ frame.  My saving grace was an injury to my foot in which I had to give my running shoes time to allow it to heal.  This injury concluded my obsession with running, calories, and the number on the scale.
I worked with many people in the operating room who encouraged me to try Crossfit.  I found the idea much too intimidating.  After much thought and debate, I decided to give it a try on a free Saturday WOD just to see what it was all about (thank you Kevin Brodock!!).  I LOVED IT!  I knew I had to give it a try.  I signed up for the elements class soon after.  That too, was terrifying!  I specifically remember Mack teaching us snatch form…it caused a lot of anxiety for this girl.  The idea of putting weight above my head almost brought me to tears!  I worked through my anxiety and decided I needed to join to make me a better me.
I have been at Beartooth Crossfit less than a year and already have seen amazing results!  I am stronger than I have ever been…and love it!  The coaches have amazing patience and a genuine interest in training someone to get stronger.  The environment within Beartooth Crossfit amongst it’s members is very supportive and encouraging.  Thank you to each member of the 5AM group!!  I continue to be encouraged and inspired by all of you.
Beartooth Crossfit has allowed me to let go of the number of miles pounded on the treadmill, the calories burned, and the number on the scale.  Instead, I have decided that “Strong is the new skinny.”  Thanks again to the coaches, Mack, Dru, and Dayne for their continued dedication and support and to the many wonderful people I have met at Beartooth Crossfit along my journey.
